Towards a Safer, Empowered, and Sustainable Society

Impact Story

From hesitation to open conversations
From myths to understanding
From shame to confidence.

For many girls, the first conversation about menstruation begins with fear, confusion, and silence.
During our sessions in government schools, we realized that most girls had never been given a safe space to ask questions about their own bodies.

Over the past few months, our team conducted menstrual hygiene awareness sessions for 2000+ adolescent girls across government schools. When we first entered the classrooms, the girls sat quietly, hesitant even to make eye contact. Words like period, blood, and pain were spoken in whispers. Some girls shared that they missed school every month, while others relied on cloth without knowing how to clean or dry it safely.

We began the session not with teaching, but with listening.

The discussion slowly opened up — from myths like “we should not enter the kitchen” or “playing during periods is dangerous” to practical concerns about rashes, stains, and embarrassment in classrooms. As trust built, hands started raising. What started as a shy room turned into a conversation full of curiosity and relief.

For many girls, this was the first time they understood:

  • Why periods happen,

  • How to manage hygiene safely,

  • And that menstruation is not something to feel ashamed of..

Introducing Menstrual Cups

What began as a small initiative is now a growing movement of change. The smiles, the spark in their eyes, and the eagerness to learn — that’s our biggest reward.

Together, we are not just educating children, we are empowering a generation.

Menstrual awareness is not only about health — it is about dignity, attendance, and self-confidence. When girls understand their bodies, they participate more freely in school and daily life.

Through these sessions, we didn’t just distribute information — we helped normalize a conversation that had been silenced for years.

And sometimes, impact begins simply with allowing a girl to ask a question without fear.

What Changed

The biggest shift was not just knowledge — it was confidence.

Girls who initially hid their faces were now openly discussing hygiene. Teachers reported that students continued the conversation after the session ended. In some schools, girls formed small peer groups to support each other during periods.

One student shared quietly after the session:
"I thought something was wrong with me every month. Today I understood it is normal."

Our Takeaway

In selected schools, we also introduced the concept of menstrual cups — a completely new idea for most of the girls. At first, the reaction was hesitation and surprise. The thought of a reusable product felt unfamiliar and even scary.

But once we demonstrated the cup using models and explained comfort, safety, and long-term benefits, the conversation changed. Girls began asking practical questions —
“Will it hurt?”
“Can we play sports?”
“How long can we use it?”

By the end of the session, many girls expressed confidence and curiosity rather than fear. Some even said they would explain it to their mothers and sisters at home.
